  • The levels of HDL should be kept higher. If the range sinks below 40 mg/dL then the person is at high risk of getting heart disease. A reading between 41 mg/dL and 59 mg/dL is deemed borderline low. The optimal level to maintain is 60 mg/dL or higher in case of HDL cholesterol.

Cholesterol levels in children

The acceptable levels of total and LDL cholesterol in children are different.

  • Children must have total cholesterol levels at less than 170/mg/dL. If the ranges are between 170 and 199 mg/dL, it is considered borderline. The total cholesterols levels more than 200 mg/dL in a child are considered too high.
  • The LDL levels should always be lower in children than an adult’s LDL levels. The optimal range is below 110 mg/dL. Between 110 and 129 mg/dL are considered borderline and if the levels go above 130 mg/dL, it means high cholesterol levels.
